GOALS

torygrpThe BASES staff and Board of Directors have developed a number of goals to be achieved during the next twelve to fifteen months.

PROGRAMS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
We want to focus our efforts on the Recovery High program and all of the adolescent substance abuse services and groups involved with this program. Adolescent substance abuse programs continue to be in high demand as state and federal funding shrinks. In addition to maintaining our current activities, we also realize the need to continue our in-depth analysis and evaluation of our program's effectiveness in producing positive, long-term changes in the lives of our young people.

FINANCIAL
BASES primary fundraising goal is to raise funds for continuation of our adolescent substance abuse services.

GOVERNANCE
The Board of Directors will add several new members in order to broaden its base of experience and expertise and also address the issue of additional fundraising needs.

FUNDING NEEDS

BASES total annual expense budget is $250,000. We receive approximately $200,000 each year in fee for service contracts through our many different services. This leaves us with our $50,000 annual fundraising goal. We are supported by the local United Way, write grants to local foundations and request funding help from local business, organizations and individuals. As a 501(c)3 non-profit, donations to BASES qualify as tax deductible. We complete an annual license to solicit with the State of Michigan, have an annual audit of our financials by a certified public accountant and our volunteer governing board of directors reviews all expenditures.

Recovery High began in 1999 and has been utilized by teens from over half the counties in Michigan. The program has proven itself to be highly effective. Recovery High is a cooperative effort between our non-profit, licensed substance abuse organization, BASES, Charlevoix Probate Court and Boyne City Alternative Schools. Through our fundraising efforts, local teens and their families that do not require residential care, have access to all of our educational and intervention groups at no cost. Since 1999, local youth have accessed over $50,000 worth of substance abuse education and intervention services at no cost on an annual basis. Student drug and survey results for Charlevoix County students show significant declines in use from the late 1990's.

BEYOND

BASES was founded in 1993 to address local substance abuse needs of adolescents, young adults and their families. BASES has thrived since that time by partnering with schools, courts, communities and organizations to meet our local needs in a proactive, fiscally sensible manner. We have developed a very strong and dedicated staff, board of directors and volunteer base. We combined efforts with a local teen center in 1997, purchased the facility in 1998, paid off the mortgage in 2002 and finished renovations of the building in 2003. Since that time we have focused our efforts on maintaining the facility and the teen programs that we have in place through our Recovery High program. We invite you to join our team and make a difference by investing in our young people today. In recent years we are taking a more active role in community education, consultation to schools & community groups, and developing training programs to assist in educating area professionals that work with teens.

It has been a long-term objective of Scott Kelly for BASES to have a high yield account for two reasons:

* To enable the staff to concentrate all of their time providing young people the skills and opportunities for a drug-free future, and
* To increase our ability to provide services to young people and their families at no cost to them.

A high yield account of $5 million, earning at least 5% per year, would generate $250,000 which would meet our current annual operational needs. Until this becomes a reality we will continue to do our best while striving to get better at what we do.

We have established a non-endowed account at the Charlevoix County Community Foundation for those who would like to make contributions to the Community Foundation on our behalf and gain the various tax benefits through these type of donations. We have also secured a financial broker who can assist us in liquidating donations that may come in the form of stocks, bonds, or certificates. If you would like additional information, please contact Scott.
